Position Summary:
Safely operates heavy construction equipment and other related equipment.

Department: Public Works

Posting Type: Announcement/Bid

Salary: $30.14 per hour

Union: This position is included in the Pittsburgh Joint Collective Bargaining Committee and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Union Bid Form: Not required. Your application for this position will serve as your union Bid Form.

Civil Service Classification: Non-Competitive

Requirements

• Applicants must submit a complete application including education, work experience, a resume (if applicable), and completed supplemental questions.
• Applicants must become residents of the City of Pittsburgh prior to employment and must remain residents throughout employment.
• A current, valid Commercial Class B driver’s license with the “L” airbrake restriction lifted is required at the time of application and must be maintained throughout employment. Driver's license will be verified prior to appointment.

Note: If your name appears on the current eligibility list for Heavy Equipment Operator, re-application is not necessary. Re-applying will disqualify your application.

Qualifying Requirements

• At least two (2) years of experience operating various types of heavy equipment (e.g., loaders, bulldozers, pavers, rollers, graders, backhoes, excavators, cranes rated 10 tons and over, etc.).
• No specific education/training required, but successful completion of a recognized Pre-Apprentice Heavy Equipment Operator Program can substitute experience.

Civil Service Examinations

• Written: Not required.
• Performance: Based on knowledge/abilities listed in the position description. Examinations scheduled as needed.
• Medical: Required prior to start date.

Position Duties

• Operate various heavy equipment safely.
• Assist in construction and maintenance tasks such as excavating, backfilling, road repair, snow plowing, sewer work, bridge inspection, etc.
• Service, maintain, and repair equipment as needed.
• Follow safety procedures during operation and repair.
• Load and unload materials from City vehicles.
• Drive City vehicles as required.
• Use technology to maintain records and report work performed.
• Perform related duties and tasks as assigned.
• May work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
