Summary of Primary Functions: Dobbs Equipment is seeking an experienced Shop Service Technician. Technicians are responsible for the repair, diagnosis, overhaul, and reconditioning maintenance of customer and company heavy equipment and components. Depending on the location and assignment, the technician will be responsible for some, or all the functions and duties listed below. These repairs may require working hours in addition to the normal work schedule for emergency calls or routine service as required. This job description does not include a complete listing of all the duties and functions of the position. Management reserves the right to assign other duties or projects as necessary.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Follow all safety rules and regulations in performing work assignments while maintaining a safe work environment and safe work habits.
- Recondition, repair, service, and assemble machinery and industrial equipment.
- Diagnose problems and determine necessary repairs.
- Perform inspections as required.
- Report shortages and malfunctions to the Service Manager.
- Maintain records of all time, parts, and supplies used in repairs and servicing.
- Handle customer problems objectively and tactfully.
- Assist in directing work of helpers or trainees and provide instructions as required.
- Complete disassembly and inspection efficiently to facilitate parts ordering and scheduling.
- Perform all service tasks assigned by the Service Manager, Supervisor, or Shop Foreman.
- Prepare reports and forms related to job assignments.
- Report to Service Manager any additional work necessary for proper operation and safety.
- Participate in service training programs for skill and knowledge development.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
- Report unsafe or unserviceable tools, equipment, or vehicles to the Service Manager.
- Represent the dealership professionally at all times.
- Operate trucks and equipment carefully, following safety laws.
- Maintain and care for shop tools, equipment, vehicles, and colleagues' belongings.
- Report to work on time as scheduled.
- Work up to 12-hour days, including weekends and holidays as needed.
- Operate company vehicles following all safety laws, if necessary.
- Adhere to Dobbs Equipment safety policies and those of clients, which is a condition of employment.
Qualifications
- Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Knowledge of industrial equipment maintenance and operation.
- Ability to perform basic repairs and maintenance using specialized tools and procedures.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment safely in a shop environment.
Education, Skills, and Experience
- Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, or a minimum of 2 years related experience.
- Stay current with technical updates.
- Proficient in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Knowledge of John Deere and competitive products.
- Forklift certification preferred.
- Effective communication skills and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent time management and self-motivation.
- Flexible schedule, including weekends or overtime.
- Ability to interpret safety rules, manuals, and procedures.
- Good written communication skills for reports and correspondence.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions in various formats.
- Skills in disassembly, assembly, and repair of components and machines.
- Basic math skills for measurements and calculations.
- Quick learner with innovative thinking.
- Overnight travel less than 5% for training.
- Bilingual skills are a plus.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Work is performed in a shop setting with exposure to temperature changes, noise, fumes, dust, and mechanical parts. Physical demands include using PPE, full range of motion, climbing, lifting loads over 50 lbs, and good vision. Regular talking and hearing are required.
