Summary of Primary Functions
Dobbs Equipment is seeking an experienced Field Service Technician. Technicians are responsible for the repair, diagnosis, overhaul, and reconditioning maintenance of customer and company heavy equipment and components. Depending on the location and assignment, the technician will be responsible for some, or all the functions and duties listed below. These repairs may require working hours in addition to the normal work schedule for emergency calls or routine service as required.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. (Other duties may be assigned)
- Follow all safety rules and regulations in performing work assignments while maintaining a safe work environment and safe work habits.
- Read job orders and observe and listen to equipment in operation to determine malfunction and plan work procedures.
- Install fuel injection nozzles and pumps, change or recharge batteries, and replace transmissions, hydraulic systems, and component parts.
- Examine protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices on equipment, and make adjustments.
- Check and report any shortages and malfunctions to the Service Manager.
- Lubricate moving parts and drive repaired equipment to verify conformance to specifications.
- Fabricate special lifting or towing attachments, hydraulic systems, shields, or other devices according to blueprints or schematic drawings.
- Remove, replace, and repair tires, undercarriages, and earth-moving and timber harvesting attachments.
- Maintain records and account for all time, parts, work orders, and supplies used in repairing and servicing both customer and dealership equipment.
- Report to Service Manager any additional work required to ensure proper operation and safety of equipment.
- Maintain and care for the shop tools and equipment.
- Ensure work is performed safely and safe work procedures are followed throughout the department.
- Read schematics indicating operating specifications for units or components and the type of evaluation required.
- Continue to work on revenue-producing work as needed.
- Test units for conformance with operating requirements such as specified horsepower and lifting performance.
- Help ensure that our new and used whole goods are in good working condition.
- Maintain assigned service vehicle in areas of cleanliness, daily maintenance, and inspections.
- Participate in service training programs required for development of skills and knowledge.
- Represent the dealership as a professional Service Technician at all times.
- Report to work on time, as scheduled.
- Ability to work up to 12-hour days, varying shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Operate company vehicles following all motor vehicle safety laws.
- Adhere to Dobbs Equipment and client safety policies; compliance is a condition of employment.
Qualifications
The following are the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required:
- Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Knowledge of industrial equipment maintenance and operation.
- Ability to perform basic repairs and required maintenance using special tools and equipment following Technical Manual procedures.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment safely.
Education, Skills, and Experience
- Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, or a minimum of 2 years related experience and/or equivalent combination.
- Stay current with technical changes.
- Proficient knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Maintain current product knowledge of John Deere and competitive products.
- Forklift Certification (preferred).
- Effective communication skills with teammates.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Self-motivated and able to self-manage.
- Flexible schedule, including weekends or overtime when necessary.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to document diagnoses and work performed.
- Quick learner with innovative thinking.
- Overnight travel less than 5% for training purposes.
- Bilingual skills are a plus.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Work involves exposure to changing temperatures, humidity, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, dust, and proximity to moving mechanical parts. Physical requirements include:
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as respirators, welding shields, hard hats, vests, safety glasses, goggles, gloves.
- Full range of motion for back, arms, hands, fingers, legs, including climbing, twisting, squatting, and pushing.
- Use of hand tools, fuel hoses, lubrication systems.
- Climbing onto mobile equipment (typically 3-4 feet high).
- Lifting or carrying loads over 50 lbs but less than 75 lbs.
- Vision abilities including close, distance, and peripheral vision.
- Moderate noise levels requiring talking and hearing.
