Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Operate equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ensure safe slopes on excavations and proper barricading.
  • Locate utilities and other buried lines prior to digging.
  • Follow trenching and shoring standards.
  • Install underground sewer, water, and storm drain in trenches.
  • Excavate and backfill utility trenches.
  • Operate loader to move pipes, fittings, and manage bedding stockpiles.
  • Perform some heavy lifting and labor tasks.

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or GED.

Work Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience installing sewer, water, and storm drain for equipment operators.
  • Entry-level positions available for field labor.
  • Ability to operate multiple pieces of equipment including backhoe, trackhoe, and loader.
  • Previous heavy equipment operation experience or training is highly preferred.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved instructions.
  • Work well with others in group or one-on-one settings.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Observe safety and security procedures; report unsafe conditions; use equipment properly.
  • Adapt to changes in the work environment; handle frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events.
  • Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Follow instructions, respond to management, and commit to long hours when necessary.
  • Ask for and offer help when needed; generate suggestions for improvement.
  • Demonstrate accuracy, thoroughness, and a focus on quality; use feedback to improve performance.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands include frequent sitting, climbing, using hands for signaling and handling equipment, occasional standing, walking, crawling, kneeling, bending, reaching above shoulders, and lifting/moving up to 50-75 lbs. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception.
