Job summary

Carle Health is seeking an Assistant Counsel: Litigation to manage medical malpractice and general liability claims, coordinate defense counsel, and prepare case evaluations. This role works under the SVP/Chief Risk Officer and collaborates across risk management and clinical teams.

The ideal candidate will hold a Doctorate in Law, be licensed in good standing (ARDC), and possess relevant legal work experience in healthcare litigation.

• Doctorate of Law required.
• Legal work experience required.

Responsibilities

• Manages day-to-day uncomplicated medical malpractice and general liability claims in active litigation or files needing counsel guidance, including reserves, investigations, liability assessments, and coordination of defense counsel.
• Collaborates with executive leadership to review and evaluate potentially compensable events, prepare medical record summaries, witness interviews and pre-litigation negotiation.
• Prepares case evaluation reports and secures settlement authority on appropriate cases; handles employment-related claims and other types of litigation as assigned.
• Prepares case evaluation reports and trends information for the Risk & Claims Committee and presents to the Committee as appropriate.
• Identifies claims suitable for early resolution and negotiates/settles claims within authority.
• Communicates significant case developments to Association Counsel: Litigation and Insurance and the SVP/Chief Risk Officer.
• Maintains and updates the claims database and coordinates educational sessions on risk exposure.
• Engages in continual learning to address emerging general and professional liability risks and industry trends.
