Job summary

Medical University of South Carolina seeks an Associate Counsel to provide legal support to the MUHA enterprise and its legal affairs team. The role involves overseeing litigation, coordinating with external counsel, reviewing contracts, and delivering proactive legal advice to mitigate risk.

You will work with various departments, conduct research, and participate in training offerings to address regulatory and program needs. In-house experience in healthcare settings is preferred.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Admitted to practice law in the State of South Carolina with at least 2 years of litigation experience.
• Knowledge of federal and state healthcare laws, regulations, and codes.
• Proficient in drafting, negotiating, and reviewing legal documents.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to influence and support the organization.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
• High degree of client service, professional ethics, and integrity.

Responsibilities

• Litigation – assists with oversight and management of litigation and risk mitigation, liaises with external counsel on strategy, case management, and discovery coordination.
• Directs and coordinates records release in response to subpoenas, court orders, FOIA requests, and inquiries to ensure proper release and accuracy.
• Reviews or drafts contracts and provides legal advice on contract disputes and risk management.
• Provides legal advice on a broad range of issues and identifies potential risks to mitigate.
• Performs legal and factual research, stays updated on legislation and policy changes, and offers training on legal topics.
