Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications
Overview
NIU’s Division of Student Affairs and Risk Management are seeking applicants for a comprehensive role focused on student health and well-being. Reflecting the strong partnership between Student Affairs and Risk Management, this position includes responsibilities spanning both areas in support of the university’s commitment to student wellness and success. The successful candidate will provide educational opportunities for students and help facilitate immunization mandates, health insurance requirements, and medical care through NIU’s Student Health Clinic partner. By integrating student support services with university compliance responsibilities, this role offers a diverse and meaningful portfolio of work dedicated to advancing the health, well‑being, and success of NIU students.
Position Summary
The position is a holistic partnership between Student Affairs and Risk Management, supporting student wellness needs. Areas of responsibility include wellness education, vendor liaising, immunizations, student health insurance, and other duties dedicated to student well‑being.
This is an in-person position with some possibility for hybrid work relative to operational needs.
Student Health Compliance
- Immunization management/system management:
- Serve as Liaison to Med+Proctor, resolving any system or operational issues
- Complete annual state report on student immunization compliance, analyze relevant data for internal reporting purposes
- Track and maintain institutional compliance with statutes related to student health and well‑being, develop and implement objectives for compliance, and prepare audit reports
- Serve as an administrative resource for students, faculty, and staff, advising on immunization requirements and compliance procedures
- Represent the unit at various meetings and on committees such as the HIPAA task force
- Manage remaining electronic and paper health records; fulfill records requests in compliance with federal and state statute and institutional policies; follow institutional records retention policies and applicable state laws related to records retention
- Develop and implement operational policies and procedures relevant to student immunizations and records retention
Student Health Insurance
- Respond to student questions and concerns about the Student Health Insurance plan
- Manage the Student Health Insurance waiver process
- Process premium payments and audits
- Participate in negotiations and procurement of coverage in partnership with Risk Management
Relationship Management – Northwestern Medicine Health Services
- Serve as a technical resource for students, advising them on health insurance utilization and coverage at Northwestern Medicine’s facility on campus.
- Attend regular meetings with Northwestern Medicine Staff, as a partner to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs to discuss changes, concerns, and areas of opportunity for service
- Student Wellness education and activities (with AVP Student Affairs and Student Wellness team). Examples include:
- Develop and present educational sessions about health-related topics including, but not limited to, insurance plan utilization, substance use (in partnership with Student Wellness), and general well‑being
- Participate in campus‑wide well‑being events such as the annual Well‑Being Fair and emerging initiatives related to health and well‑being
Communications
- Participate in Resource Fairs at New Student Orientations and other similar events such as Week of Welcome, representing both Student Health Insurance and Immunizations, answering questions
- Manage the Health Services and Student Health Insurance websites, keeping them up to date with accurate information
- Draft and organize emails, text messages, MyNIU reminders and other communication strategies for student health requirements, including immunizations, health insurance, and other compliance and/or educational matters, coordinating with internal and external partners as appropriate (e.g. NIU DoIT, Registration and Records, Med+Proctor)

Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, management, or a field related to the position.
- Two (2) years of professional business, financial, and/or managerial work experience.
- Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in an area of specialization inherent to the position may be required.
NOTE : A Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.

- Knowledge related to Nursing, Public Administration, or Healthcare Administration.
- Knowledge of healthcare operations including customer/patient service, familiarity with immunizations administration and implementation/enforcement, and knowledge of other related federal, state, or industry compliance requirements.
- Skill in training and/or presenting educational offerings in a healthcare or academic setting.
- Knowledge of insurance and claims, records management, and/or vendor relationship management in a healthcare or academic setting.
Preferred Qualifications (Civil Service)
- Experience working in higher education.
- Experience with direct oversight of health insurance, immunization, experiential/teaching, compliance, or other healthcare programs.
