Job summary

LEARN Charter School Network is seeking a Health Office Nurse (LPN) to support the school health office at the South Chicago Campus in Chicago, IL. The role covers direct nursing care, medication administration, and health plan implementation for students.

You will work with the RN School Nurse and campus team to ensure safe health management, immunization review, and health documentation, with occasional coverage at other campuses as needed.

Qualifications

  • Current, unrestricted Illinois LPN license.
  • CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Pediatric, school nursing, community health, ambulatory care or similar nursing experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care to students in illness, injury, or health concerns.

Founded in 2001, LEARN is a nationally recognized non-profit network of PreK-8th grade elementary charter schools that is creating measurable, transformational change in the lives of its students. We currently educate 4,100 students, a majority low-income, minority student population (88% and 98%, respectively) across 12 campuses, the majority of which are in Chicago, IL. LEARN also serves families in Waukegan and North Chicago IL including the families of service members located at the Great Lakes Naval Academy and Joint Base Anacostia–Bolling (JBAB) in Washington D.C. This is an in person work environment, not a remote opportunity.

What You'll Do

The Health Office Nurse (LPN) supports the daily operations of the school health office and provides direct nursing care to students with routine, chronic, and emergent health needs. Working in collaboration with the RN School Nurse and campus team, the Health Office Nurse supports the safe management of student health conditions, medication administration, treatments, and implementation of established student health plans. The role also supports student health compliance through the collection, review, documentation, tracking, and follow-up of required immunization and health records.

The Health Office Nurse will have a primary campus or regional assignment within the Chicago network. Occasional coverage at other network campuses in Chicago and Lake County may be required based on staffing and student health needs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide direct nursing care to students experiencing illness, injury, or other health concerns in accordance with professional standards, established protocols, and LPN scope of practice.
  • Administer medications and provide ordered treatments and health-related procedures in accordance with provider orders, student health plans, organizational policies, and applicable regulations.
  • Support students with chronic or complex health conditions, including diabetes, asthma, seizure disorders, severe allergies, and other conditions requiring ongoing health management during the school day.
  • Monitor student condition, recognize changes or concerns, and promptly elevate students requiring additional nursing assessment, intervention, or a higher level of care.
  • Recognize and respond to medical emergencies and initiate appropriate nursing interventions, emergency protocols, administrative response, and EMS activation when indicated.
  • Implement established Individualized Healthcare Plans, Emergency Action Plans, and other student-specific health plans within the LPN scope of practice.
  • Accurately document nursing care, medications, treatments, health office visits, communications, and follow-up in the designated student information/health record system.
  • Collect and review student health records for completeness and maintain required immunization, physical examination, medication, and other health documentation.
  • Track students who are missing or non-compliant with health requirements, maintain accurate compliance records, and conduct timely follow-up with parents/guardians.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student health needs and collaborate with nurses, administrators, teachers, and other school staff to support student health and safety.
  • Maintain student privacy and confidentiality and a safe, organized, clean, and appropriately stocked health office.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness, required trainings, and other Health & Wellness initiatives.
  • Provide occasional coverage at other Chicago or Lake County campuses based on staffing, emergency, or student health needs.
What You'll Need
  • Current, unrestricted Illinois Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license required.
  • Current CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Pediatric, school nursing, community health, ambulatory care, or similar nursing experience strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of medication administration, chronic disease management, emergency response, and student health needs.
  • Ability to recognize changes in student condition and appropriately elevate care.
  • Strong clinical judgment, communication, organization, documentation, computer, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work calmly and effectively during medical emergencies and collaborate with students, families, school staff, and healthcare professionals.
  • Ability and willingness to travel between network campuses when occasional coverage is required.
Physical Requirements

Ability to move throughout the school campus and respond promptly to student health needs and emergencies. Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and perform physical activities necessary to provide nursing care and emergency response, including lifting, moving, or assisting students and equipment as required, with reasonable accommodation as applicable.
