Job summary

Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is seeking a detail-oriented Health Information Coordinator to ensure accurate recording of health information in medical records. You will coordinate indexing, filing, release requests, and EMR data entry to support clinicians’ care planning.

Responsibilities include scanning, indexing, responding to information requests, and ensuring compliance with HIPAA and NC regulations.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent with 2+ years of medical office or hospital experience; knowledge of medical terminology preferred; Spanish fluency a plus.

Responsibilities

• Scans all records received by mail, fax and other sources; indexes loose documents in Medical Records; retrieves records for patient appointments.
• Responds to information requests per policies and procedures.
• Processes medical records release forms per NC laws and MAHEC regulations; forwards copies to clinics or outside entities as needed.
• Enters data and corrects errors in EMR and Practice Management systems.
• Mails printed lab results to patients as requested by physicians.
• Handles items on cue list promptly; verifies dictated EMR notes; responds to clinical staff inquiries about records.
• Adheres to HIPAA and 42 CFR regulations; maintains documentation of access to medical records.
