Job description

The School Health Coordinator supports the health, safety, and well-being of students by coordinating school health services and maintaining a safe, responsive health office. The position serves primarily as a school-based health coordination and triage role rather than a clinical nursing position.

The School Health Coordinator is responsible for implementing physician-directed health care plans, providing basic first aid, administering medications in accordance with school policy and applicable regulations, maintaining student health records, coordinating faculty and staff health training, and collaborating with students, families, faculty, the school counselor, administrators, and healthcare providers.

As a member of the school community, the School Health Coordinator partners with faculty, families, administrators, and the school counselor to promote student wellness and support students' ability to fully participate in the academic and co-curricular life of the school.

The School Health Coordinator functions within the scope of school health services, emphasizing assessment, triage, coordination, communication, education, and prevention. Students requiring medical diagnosis or ongoing treatment are referred to parents/guardians, emergency personnel, or licensed healthcare providers, as appropriate.

The Raleigh School is seeking a compassionate, organized, and highly collaborative Health Coordinator to support the health, safety, and well-being of our students.

The Health Coordinator oversees the day-to-day coordination of student health services and serves as a resource for students, families, faculty, and administrators. The role includes providing basic first aid and triage, coordinating student health and emergency care plans, administering medications, maintaining health records, supporting faculty and staff training, and collaborating with families and healthcare providers.

This is a school-based health coordination and triage role rather than a traditional clinical nursing position. We are looking for someone who combines strong healthcare knowledge and sound judgment with excellent communication, organization, and relationship-building skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide basic first aid and care for students experiencing minor illnesses or injuries and respond appropriately to medical emergencies.
Assess student health concerns and determine appropriate next steps, including returning students to class, contacting families, or recommending medical evaluation.
  • Coordinate and support implementation of Individualized Health Care Plans, Emergency Action Plans, Allergy Action Plans, and other physician-directed accommodations.
  • Administer and manage student medications in accordance with school policy and applicable North Carolina requirements.
  • Maintain accurate, secure, and confidential student health records and health office supplies.
  • Communicate with families, faculty, administrators, counselors, coaches, and healthcare providers regarding student health needs and accommodations.
  • Provide guidance and training to faculty and staff on topics such as first aid, EpiPen administration, anaphylaxis, seizures, asthma, diabetes, medication administration, and infection prevention.
  • Coordinate health planning for field trips and school-sponsored activities.
  • Support the school's emergency preparedness efforts and health-related protocols.
  • Maintain a welcoming, organized health office and build positive, trusting relationships with students and families.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment in all matters related to student health.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited healthcare program appropriate to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Current licensure, certification, or credential in a healthcare field appropriate to the position, such as RN, LPN, EMT, Paramedic, or another comparable healthcare credential.
  • RN licensure is preferred but not required.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification, or the ability to obtain certification upon hire.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Experience in school health, pediatric care, emergency medicine, urgent care, or a related healthcare setting preferred.
  • Strong communication, organizational, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to assess situations, exercise sound judgment, and make appropriate triage decisions.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a school community.
  • A genuine interest in supporting the health, safety, and well-being of children.
Schedule & Physical Requirements

This is a part-time, school-year position working Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. The position requires the ability to move throughout campus during emergencies, assist students with minor mobility needs, lift and carry health and emergency supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, and work indoors and outdoors as needed.
