Job summary

SFJAZZ is seeking part-time Front of House staff to warmly welcome guests, assist with seating and ticket scanning, and support performances and events at SFJAZZ Center and off-site venues. You will interact with patrons, volunteers, and staff, delivering exceptional customer service throughout varied events.

Ideal candidates have 2 years in performance arts or customer service, strong communication, and reliability in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain ADA knowledge, crowd control, and emergency procedures.

Job description

Summary

SFJAZZ is seeking part-time individuals with a positive attitude to welcome guests and patrons. As an important part of the Front of House (FOH) team, this role will support concert performances, donor events, rentals and special performances/events at SFJAZZ year-round. This role will interact with guests, patrons, VIP members, volunteers and SFJAZZ staff. To be successful in the role, we expect someone with a friendly manner to easily attend to guest needs and provide exceptional customer service.

Responsibilities

You will be assigned a variety of tasks within this role for individual shows and events produced by SFJAZZ and rental clients. The majority of these events will be at the SFJAZZ Center and some are off-site events at locations like Davies Symphony, Paramount Theatre in Oakland, SFCM, and the Herbst War Memorial.

  • Work collaboratively and professionally within the FOH team and within the organization at large.
  • Establish and maintain professional, friendly, productive, and cooperative relationships with patrons, staff, volunteer ushers, visitors, and clients.
  • Greet and direct patrons and visitors; scan tickets; facilitate coat and bag check; monitor entryways to building and into auditoriums and maintain an exceptionally high level of customer service during events, performances, receptions, lectures, screenings, and conferences.
  • Provide information to patrons about SFJAZZ programs and events.
  • Work collaboratively with Box Office and Production to coordinate timely seating of patrons.
  • Respond with urgency to patron and staff concerns or issues. Properly elevate concerns as appropriate.
  • Maintain working knowledge of ADA requirements, crowd control practices, crisis intervention, and emergency procedures.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of equipment including scanners and radios.
  • Assist with event setup, including furniture placement, stanchion and sign setup, and numbering of the theater seats.
  • Manage & assign duties for staff ushers and volunteers for each event shift.
  • Support and oversee volunteers in their assigned roles.
  • Assist with set up and sale of artist merchandise using AtVenu Point of Sale software
  • Track and maintain the inventory of FOH materials
  • Learn, execute and update Offsite Standard Operating Procedures for non SFJAZZ Center locations.
  • Participate in Mandatory Shifts SFJAZZ for performance dates that require a high volume of staff including runs longer than 4 days per week. Mandatory shifts include Gala, Festival, New Years Eve, and Chris Botti
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • 2 years in performance arts, customer service, or other job-related experience.
  • Excellent verbal, communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Excellent technical skills, and experience with MS Office 350 and Artifax scheduling software.
  • Experience with Point-of-Sale software and hardware – experience with AtVenu a plus.
  • Able to carry out directions as well as to take initiative in problem solving.
  • Able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Able to work effectively in partnership with people of various and diverse cultural and racial backgrounds.
  • Resourceful and motivated self-starter, looking to work in the non-profit performing arts and events sectors.
  • Highly organized, team worker, with the ability to stay calm under pressure while maintaining open communication.
  • Collaborative work style and history of working effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Commitment to and ability to articulate the SFJAZZ Vision and Mission Statement.
  • Superior customer service skills.
  • Availability to work varied schedules, including days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • An outgoing personality with an interest or love of jazz and live performance is a plus.
Working Conditions

The SFJAZZ season generally operates on a performance schedule of Thursday-Sunday, in addition to rentals which are typically held Monday-Thursday, generally late September through early June. The typical onsite shift for this position is 5pm – 10pm on performance days and five-hour shifts ranging from 7am to 7pm for rentals. Rental timelines are subject to change.

This is a part-time position, and you will be assigned up to 25 hours per week by your supervisor. The minimum number of hours you will be assigned per pay period will be 20 hours.

Physical requirements include the ability to stand for extended periods of time, safely navigate multiple sets of stairs, work in dark environments, and lift up to 35 pounds.
