Avenues, a leading New York school, seeks a Head Teacher (English) for Grades 1-5 in the Lower Division. This full-time role involves working in a dual language immersion setting, collaborating with English and language teachers to plan, teach, and assess a rigorous curriculum.

The position requires a minimum of 3 years of teaching in K-6, expertise in balanced literacy and problem-based math, and a strong collaborative spirit.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of teaching experience in grades K-6 with a proven track record of student learning.
• Strong understanding of and instructional skills teaching through a balanced literacy approach in the reading and writing workshop model.
• Experience with problem-based mathematics instruction.
• Highly effective collaborator, eager to listen deeply, contribute to a team and achieve goals together.
• Deep dedication to learning and growing as an educator.
• Respect for, and appreciation of, a diverse community of learners, families and colleagues.
• Ability to embrace change and consider new perspectives.
• Graduate degree in education, teaching or a related field highly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate intensively and daily with English and target language colleagues to design learning outcomes, monitor growth, and address individual student needs.
• Design and teach an innovative curriculum that engages all learners in meaningful work and develops social responsibility.
• Employ a range of instructional practices to meet diverse learners based on informal and formal assessments.
• Deeply connect with students, colleagues and parents to uphold a culture of welcome, safety and respect.
• Invoke a robust learning atmosphere that makes students value being at school and feel part of a joyful learning community.
• Partner with and mentor an associate teacher to foster growth in Grade 1.
