Job summary

Avenues is seeking a Head Teacher for Spanish Immersion in the Lower Division (Grades 1-5) at the New York campus. This full-time role requires leadership in curriculum design, student growth monitoring, and cross-language collaboration to advance bilingual learning.

You will work closely with both Spanish and English teachers, mentor an associate teacher, and uphold a culture of inquiry, respect, and excellence in teaching. Competitive compensation and benefits accompany this important mission.

Qualifications

• Full fluency in Spanish and immersion teaching experience.
• At least 3 years of teaching experience in grades K-6.
• Experience with balanced literacy in reading/writing workshop.
• Experience with problem-based mathematics instruction.
• Graduate degree in education preferred.

DEEP COLLABORATION THROUGH LANGUAGE IMMERSION

• Teacher teams composed of English and Spanish teachersshare two classes of students
• Teacher teams share responsibility for teaching curriculum that promotes their students’ social, emotional and academic growth in both languages.
• Given this structure, teacher teams communicate daily to plan lessons and discuss student progress
• Additionally teachers collaborate with fellow grade-level and language colleagues during weekly meetings.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Collaborate intensively and daily with Spanish and English colleagues to design learning outcomes, monitor growth, and thoughtfully address individual student needs.
• Design and teach an innovative curriculum that engages all learners in meaningful and challenging work that cultivates real-world problem solving skills and develops social responsibility.
• Employ a range of instructional practices to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners based on informal and formal assessments.
• Deeply connect with students, colleagues and parents to vigorously uphold a culture of welcome, safety and respect.
• Invoke a robust learning atmosphere that leads students to value being at school and feel part of a rigorous and joyful learning community.
• Partner with and mentor an associate teacher to create a student-centered classroom and further his/her growth (Grade 2).

WHAT YOU BRING

• Full fluency in Spanish and experience in immersion teaching
• At least 3 years of teaching experience in grades K-6 with a proven track record of student learning
• Strong understanding of instructional skills teaching through a balanced literacy approach in the reading and writing workshop model
• Experience with problem-based mathematics instruction
• Highly effective collaborator, eager to listen deeply, contribute to a team and achieve goals together
• Deep dedication to learning and growing as an educator
• Respect for, and appreciation of, a diverse community of learners, families and colleagues
• Ability to embrace change and consider new perspectives
• Graduate degree in education, teaching or a related field highly preferred

If hired for this position, the annual salary range is between $70,000 - $110,000. The salary may vary depending on your professional experience and skills.
