Job summary

Southern Oregon Head Start is hiring a Teacher Assistant to support the classroom teacher, provide nurturing care, and help prepare children for kindergarten. The TA may lead the class in the teacher’s absence and assists in meal service and center upkeep.

Starting wage ranges from $18.54–$20.60/hr, with bilingual pay from $19.47–$21.63/hr, dependent on education and bilingual screening. Requires HS diploma or equivalent with CDA/Step 8 credentials or enrollment plan.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; and CDA credential required or Step 8 in Oregon Registry Pathways program required OR Current enrollment in a CDA program to be completed within 2 years of hire required OR Enrollment in a program leading to a Step 8 in Oregon Registry Pathways program required.
• Certification: CPR/First Aid Certification, Food Handler Certification and TS Gold Inter-Rater Reliability Certification required (certifications may be obtained at Head Start after hire).
• Experience: One-year experience working with young children age birth to 8 years required, preschool age specific preferred.

Responsibilities

• Work directly with children individually, in small and large groups; ensure safety and educational development.
• Assist classroom teacher with curriculum development and implementation.
• Take and record child observations; assist bilingual observations for dual language learners.
• Provide transportation supervision and ensure safety restraints on bus runs.
• Maintain classroom cleanliness and safety; assist with nutrition in center kitchen as assigned.
• Communicate with children, families, and co-workers; participate in staff meetings and training.
• Support the teacher in ensuring compliance with Head Start performance standards and agency policies.
