Job summary

SimplePractice, LLC seeks a senior leader to own fraud, payments underwriting, and platform-abuse controls across the customer lifecycle. You will report to the Chief Legal Officer and partner with CISO and Product/Engineering leadership on strategy and governance.

This role is about owning execution while a team handles day-to-day operations. You will set risk appetite, drive the roadmap for policy, data, tooling, and automation, and ensure auditable decision trails across all controls in a

Qualifications

• 10+ years in fraud, payments risk, underwriting, or financial crime, including 5+ years leading teams.
• Direct experience at a payment facilitator, PSP, acquirer, marketplace, fintech, or embedded-payments platform with merchant-of-record liability.
• Proven track record of building and scaling a fraud/risk function.
• Fluency across multiple risk surfaces—card-not-present, ACH, identity and onboarding, account takeover, disputes.
• Ability to influence product and engineering roadmaps without owning them, and present risk tradeoffs to executives.
• Experience communicating tradeoffs impacting revenue and loss to a C-level or board audience.

Responsibilities

• Define fraud risk strategy and risk appetite; set policy and thresholds.
• Build the function roadmap across policy, data, tooling, modeling, automation, and org design.
• Oversee underwriting and onboarding risk, including KYB/KYC, reserves, and payout timing policies.
• Lead fraud operations to SLA targets, with automation and AI-assisted triage.
• Own the risk policy and configuration layer of the detection stack; manage vendors.
• Collaborate with Security, Compliance, Legal, and Product to align on risk controls.
