Job summary

University of California, Berkeley's School of Social Welfare seeks an Executive Director of External Relations and Engagement to lead the school's external engagement strategy, oversee communications, development, alumni relations, and instructional design, and report to the Dean.

The role requires building partnerships with sponsors, government agencies, foundations, and peer institutions, translating research into policy and expanding non-degree revenue opportunities.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated expertise in communications, development, or revenue generation.
• Experience building or transforming an external engagement program.
• Proven ability to supervise multi-functional teams in a nonprofit environment.
• Ability to write/edit external-facing communications for donors and partners.
• Willingness to attend events, work nights/weekends, and represent the school externally.
• Creative and analytical skills to develop new programs and partnerships.
• Knowledge of program development and building relationships with employers.

Responsibilities

• Lead external engagement strategy and infrastructure across the school.
• Develop business plans, budgets, and KPIs; report on initiative effectiveness.
• Oversee development, alumni relations, and instructional design teams.
• Represent the school to partners, sponsors, government agencies, and donors.
• Organize a unified platform for partnerships across sectors (Airtable).
• Identify new opportunities and coordinate scopes of work, pitches, and budgets.
• Strategize financing for programmatic activities and coordinate grant-writing.
• Supervise ~3.5 FTE and build cross-functional capacity.
