Prolaio, in Chicago, seeks a Sr. Director of Data Engineering + Tooling to lead and scale our healthcare data engineering capabilities, building secure, compliant, AI-enabled data platforms for clinical intelligence and real-world data pipelines.

You will partner with Product, Engineering, Quality, and Clinical Operations to embed HIPAA and regulatory expectations into data features and workflows, guiding a growth-stage organization toward faster therapeutic discovery and better cardiovascular

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, Biomedical Informatics, Engineering, or related field.
• 15+ years of experience in healthcare, medtech, life sciences, digital health, or another patient-focused environment, with meaningful responsibility for data platforms, platform engineering, or cloud-native enterprise platforms.
• At least 7 years of experience as a Director or Sr. Director leading data engineering or closely related data platform teams in growth-stage or innovation-driven organizations.
• Demonstrated experience architecting and delivering healthcare data platforms that support structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data, with proven success in regulated or validated environments.
• Deep understanding of healthcare data domains and standards (HL7, FHIR, ICD, SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, OMOP, CDISC).
• Proven experience designing and operating end-to-end data flows, scalable pipelines, lineage, provenance, traceability, and data lifecycle management.
• Strong familiarity with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure) and modern data platforms (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift, Synapse).
• Strong software/data engineering experience with Python and SQL and at least one of Java or .NET; frontend knowledge (Angular/React) is a plus.
• Cross-functional, matrixed collaboration with Product, Engineering, Data Science, Analytics, Clinical Operations, Quality, Security.

Responsibilities

• Lead Prolaio’s data engineering strategy and roadmap for secure, scalable data platforms in regulated healthcare settings.
• Architect end-to-end data flows and pipelines across batch, streaming, and hybrid workloads.
• Own scalable, secure data platforms for structured, semi-structured, and unstructured clinical and operational data.
• Define and enforce data modeling, lifecycle, lineage, provenance, and auditability with HIPAA and privacy practices.
• Partner with Data Architecture to apply healthcare standards and deliver interoperable datasets.
• Build data platforms across cloud and data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift, Synapse).
• Lead AI-enabled data engineering features such as data quality monitoring and feature generation workflows.
• Collaborate with Quality, Clinical Operations, Security, Product, and Engineering to embed governance and release readiness.
• Establish high-performing teams, coaching, and cross-functional alignment in a growth-stage environment.
• Assist vendor/tool evaluations for data integration, quality, and AI-enabled data management.
