Job summary

Yugabyte is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead core database development for YugabyteDB. You will drive architecture, strategy, and delivery of core transactional and distributed components, while mentoring engineers across multiple teams and ensuring reliability in cloud-native deployments.

The role blends hands-on architectural work with people management, requires deep database internals knowledge, and offers a hybrid work model based in Sunnyvale.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive software development experience, with at least 3+ years in a Director role managing multiple teams or critical product areas.
• Substantial experience designing and developing core components of production-grade relational or distributed database engines (e.g., storage/access layer, buffer cache, logging, recovery, lock management, indexing, LSM).
• Distributed systems & cloud-native architectures experience designing and delivering internet-scale, highly available systems.
• Hands-on experience in system programming languages, particularly C/C++ and Go.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive the technical roadmap and architecture for core database components (storage engine, transactional layer, distributed consensus, multi-master replication).
• Own end-to-end development, quality, performance, and operations of team components in cloud-native environments (Kubernetes).
• Recruit, mentor, and manage high-performing engineering teams and foster deep technical ownership.
• Lead projects for write scaling, concurrency improvements, cache coherency, and 99.995% availability in multi-tenant setups.
• Collaborate with Product Management and other engineering teams to deliver integrated features.
