Job summary

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company seeks an AVP of Casualty Underwriting Performance to set enterprise underwriting philosophy for E&S/Specialty and Commercial Lines. You’ll lead strategic direction, align field leadership, and drive profitability and risk appetite targets across the casualty book.

You will shape market trends, engage with reinsurers, and collaborate with Pricing and Corporate Reinsurance to optimize strategy and capacity.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in business or related field; post-graduate business studies preferred.
• Typically 10–25 years of commercial/E&S casualty underwriting experience, with at least five years in leadership roles.

Responsibilities

• Set enterprise underwriting philosophy and strategic direction for casualty portfolio.
• Drive market trends in casualty pricing, coverage, limits/attachment points, and appetite.
• Develop a strategic roadmap identifying disruptors and translate into underwriting capabilities.
• Engage with reinsurance brokers, reinsurers, and external markets to benchmark performance.
• Partner with Corporate Reinsurance to develop casualty reinsurance strategy and capacity management.
• Collaborate with Pricing to manage modeling, rate adequacy, and exposure accumulation.
• Monitor portfolio performance and steer risk selection and program design.
• Lead enterprise best practices across casualty underwriting and guidelines.
• Lead cross-functional reviews and escalate issues across product lines.
• Ensure adherence to underwriting standards and drive continuous improvement.
