Job summary

Westover School in Middlebury, CT seeks a Head Golf Coach for the Spring 2027 season (March through May). The part-time role reports to the Athletic Director and focuses on leadership, instruction, and oversight of the golf program to develop student-athletes’ skills and character.

Qualifications

• Experience coaching high school golf or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead all aspects of the golf program, including practices, competition prep, and match-day operations.
• Instruct fundamentals: swing mechanics, short game, putting, course management, rules and etiquette.
• Develop practices for varying skill levels to promote growth for individuals and the team.
• Foster a positive team culture built on respect, effort, sportsmanship, and collaboration with the Athletics Department.
• Prepare student-athletes for matches and provide coaching feedback during competition.
• Supervise student-athletes during practices, matches, travel, and other activities.
• Coordinate with Athletic Director on schedules, transportation, course logistics, equipment, and needs.
• Communicate professionally with students, families, faculty, staff, officials, and other coaches.
• Ensure compliance with Westover School policies, league rules, and safety regulations.

Job Summary:

The Head Golf Coach will provide leadership, instruction, and oversight for Westover’s golf program, fostering an environment where student-athletes can develop their skills, confidence, sportsmanship, and understanding of the game. The Head Coach is responsible for the overall direction of the team, including practice planning, match preparation, technical instruction, student-athlete development, and collaboration with the Athletics Department.

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about working with student-athletes of varying experience levels and committed to creating a positive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate team experience.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Lead all aspects of the golf program, including planning and conducting practices, preparing for competition, and overseeing match-day operations.
• Provide instruction in golf fundamentals, including swing mechanics, short game, putting, course management, rules, and etiquette.
• Develop practices that accommodate student-athletes at varying levels of experience and promote individual and team growth.
• Foster a positive and motivating team culture that promotes respect, hard work, sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth.
• Prepare student-athletes for competitive matches and provide appropriate coaching and feedback during competition.
• Safely and effectively supervise student-athletes during practices, matches, travel, and other team activities.
• Collaborate with the Athletic Director regarding schedules, transportation, golf course and facility coordination, equipment, and other program needs.
• Communicate effectively and professionally with student-athletes, families, faculty, staff, officials, and other coaches.
• Ensure compliance with all Westover School policies and procedures, league requirements, golf rules, and applicable safety regulations.
• Travel with the team to away matches and events as required.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

• Previous golf coaching experience at the high school, club, or collegiate level and/or a successful competitive golf background preferred.
• Strong knowledge of golf fundamentals, rules, etiquette, course management, and skill development.
• Ability to lead, motivate, and support student-athletes in a positive and inclusive environment.
• Ability to effectively coach student-athletes with varying levels of golf experience.
• Strong communication, organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, reliability, and a collaborative approach.
• Enthusiasm for working with adolescents and contributing to an independent school community.
• CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
• Ability and willingness to obtain a Connecticut “A” endorsement on driver’s license to transport student-athletes is a plus.
• Successful completion of required background checks and reference review.
