Job summary

Westover School in Middlebury, CT is seeking an Assistant Swim Coach for the 2026–2027 winter season. You will assist the Head Swim Coach with practices, meets, skill development, and team logistics to foster growth, confidence, and sportsmanship among student-athletes.

The role involves afternoon practices 3–5 days a week, travel with the team, and collaboration with the Athletic Director. CPR/First Aid and Lifeguard certs are preferred; CT driver endorsement is a plus.

Qualifications

• High school, club, or collegiate coaching experience preferred.
• Ability to motivate student-athletes in a positive, inclusive environment.
• Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Afternoons available; practices 3–5 days/week; meetings Wed/Sat afternoons.
• CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
• Lifeguard certification.
• Connecticut A endorsement on driver’s license to transport athletes is a plus.
• Background check and reference review required.

Responsibilities

• Assist Head Swim Coach with planning and conducting practices and meet-day operations.
• Provide technical instruction and feedback to swimmers at varying levels.
• Support a positive team culture focused on respect, teamwork, and growth.
• Supervise student-athletes during practices, meets, travel and other activities.
• Collaborate with Head Coach and Athletic Director on team logistics and transportation.
• Communicate effectively with student-athletes, coaches, faculty and staff.
• Ensure compliance with school, league, and safety regulations.
• Travel with the team to away meets and events; assist off-campus practices.

Job Summary:

The Assistant Swim Coach will work closely with the Head Swim Coach to support Westover’s swim program and foster an environment where student-athletes can grow in skill, confidence, teamwork, and sportsmanship. This role will assist with practices, meet preparation, technical instruction, supervision, and team logistics while helping create a positive and inclusive experience for all swimmers.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Assist the Head Swim Coach with planning and conducting practices, meet preparation, and meet-day operations.


• Provide technical instruction, skill development, and individualized feedback to swimmers at varying levels of experience.


• Support a positive and motivating team culture that promotes respect, hard work, teamwork, and personal growth.


• Assist with the supervision of student-athletes during practices, meets, travel, and other team activities.


• Collaborate with the Head Swim Coach and Athletic Director on team logistics and transportation as needed.


• Communicate effectively and professionally with student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and staff.


• Support compliance with all school, league, and safety regulations.


• Travel with the team to away meets and events as needed.


• Support practices held off campus at local aquatic centers.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

• Previous coaching experience at the high school, club, or collegiate level, or a competitive swimming background preferred.


• Ability to support and motivate student-athletes in a positive, inclusive environment.


• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.


• Ability to work afternoons, with practices 3–5 days per week and meetings generally scheduled on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.


• CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.


• Lifeguard certification.


• Ability and willingness to obtain a Connecticut “A” endorsement on driver’s license to transport athletes is a plus.


• Successful completion of a background check and reference review.
