General Summary: Under general supervision is responsible for the landscape of the institution’s campus and maintaining the cleanliness of its facilities. Conducts a wide variety of grounds and facilities maintenance and general equipment repair duties. Supervises subordinate custodial and housekeeping staff. Essential Functions:

  • Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
  • Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with all stakeholders.
  • Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive working and learning environment.
  • Supervises the maintenance of the grounds and landscape of the campus.
  • Conducts an annual “walk around” facility safety audit. On a monthly basis, inspects and corrects any deficiencies on the district facility checklist.
  • Oversees and/or conducts general building maintenance as necessary involving such duties as repairing lights, doors, commodes, sinks, ceiling tiles, security and fire systems, etc; cleans heating and air conditioning unit ducts as needed.
  • Attends district-wide asbestos awareness training and participates in distributing applicable information and conducting asbestos awareness training at the local work site.
  • Repairs equipment and furniture as assigned such as vending machines, ice machines, dish washers, etc; assembles furniture as requested; moves furniture as needed.
  • Reports major repair needs to immediate supervisor.
  • Knows all electrical, gas and water cut-off locations throughout all facilities and provides cut-off training for assistant custodians.
  • Maintains motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing.
  • Repairs and maintains custodial equipment such as scrubbers, buffers, vacuums, pressure washers, etc.
  • Ensures that effective energy practices occur and are monitored on a daily basis.
  • Cleans indoor areas involving such duties as sweeping, mopping and waxing floors, cleaning tables, vacuuming, cleaning carpet, etc.
  • Requisitions supplies and materials as needed to perform duties of the entire housekeeping staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of buildings daily, as work schedule dictates.
  • Maintains parking lots involving such duties as removing debris, painting lines, etc.
  • Oversees and/or conducts the maintenance of all grounds equipment involving such duties as cleaning, sharpening and replacing blades, changing engine oil, spark plugs, air filters, belts, pulleys, tires, wheels, etc.
  • Supervises the work of assistant custodians and housekeepers providing guidance and training, coordinating work, scheduling and reviewing their work, and ensuring adherence to schedules.
  • Maintains files and records of equipment, inventory, reports, data sheets, inspections, work calendar, and auction equipment.
  • Maintains MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) sheets on all products used on the local work site and provides annual training to the housekeeping staff.
  • Utilizes appropriate protective wear when appropriate.
  • Assists cafeteria workers with heavy lifting, loading and unloading food items, supplies, and trash.
  • Assists in checking the water supply system daily to determine proper functioning.
  • Assumes responsibility for compliance with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, debris and waste.
  • Operates maintenance equipment such as tractor, mowers, weed eaters and edgers, buffers, power tools, etc.; utilizes various cleaning supplies, hand tools, and landscaping agents; operates general office equipment.
  • Participates in all professional meetings as required.
  • Effectively uses personal computing devices and software applications for the management of pertinent information and communication, as applicable.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Education/Work Experience:

  • High school graduate or equivalent with a minimum of two years of experience in building and grounds maintenance; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school district which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, tools, equipment and supplies used within grounds and building maintenance activities. Knowledge of the occupational and safety precautions of the trade, including the proper mixing of various chemicals. Knowledge of proper and safe use of equipment, tools, supplies, cleaning solutions and materials necessary for assignment completion. Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate general maintenance repairs. Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform manual work requiring some physical strength and agility. Knowledge of responsibilities for the effective supervision of subordinate housekeepers and assistant custodians. Ability to provide effective leadership, guidance and instruction to subordinate personnel. Ability to use independent judgment in supervising the daily activities of subordinate staff. Ability to use and care for a variety of cleaning and landscaping agents, materials and equipment. Ability to utilize software applications for the performance of daily duties. Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and work without a need for direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to interact and communicate in an effective and professional manner with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, students, and the general public. Ability to use of general office and technology equipment as appropriate. Working Conditions: Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors with occasional exposure to discomforting environmental conditions such as heat, cold, humidity, noise, electrical hazards, dusts and wetness. Frequent contact with strong cleaning agents. Physical exertion is frequently required to lift and move objects weighing up to 150 pounds. Mechanical devices should be used for objects weighing over 50 pounds. Routine travel is required; no overnight travel is required. Responsibility: Supervisory responsibilities for subordinate custodial and housekeeping staff. Responsible for maintenance and inventory of equipment and supplies. Responsible for reporting equipment malfunctions. Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the school board’s policy on evaluation of support personnel.
