Job summary

Houston Community College in Houston, Texas seeks a Counselor, Lead to provide leadership and supervision to the Counseling Department and to offer personal, academic, career, and crisis counseling to students.

The role oversees department procedures, staff training, caseload management, budgets, and coordination with Success Course instructors, ensuring timely and confidential counseling services. Evening/weekend hours may be required to meet student needs.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in counseling or related field.
• 5 years of experience with adults, preferably in a community college counseling setting including 2 years of supervisory experience.
• Counseling licensure (LPC/LMFT/LCSW or Licensed Psychologist) with supervisory credential preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Counseling Department in establishing and achieving annual goals.
• Develop, review, modify, and implement Counseling Department procedures and guidelines.
• Supervise and train Counseling, Disability, and Career Services staff, including performance evaluations.
• Provide department leadership and ensure consistent services by implementing institutional procedures, forms and reports.
• Review counselor caseloads focusing on persistence, retention, and student success.
• Manage departmental budget and act as signature authority.
• Approve purchases of office supplies, counseling materials, and Disability Services’ assistive technology.
• Represent the Counseling Department at system-wide meetings.
• Provide brief personal counseling and resources for further counseling as needed.
• Provide career assessment and counseling to undecided majors.
• Assist in career exploration resources for Success Courses.
• Respond to crisis and campus-critical incidents requiring counseling.
• Assist with early alert referrals and maintain at-risk student caseloads.
• Provide counseling to students on disciplinary probation or suspension when referred.
• Offer online counseling via email/phone to out-of-district/online students as needed.
• Maintain confidential student records and provide community resources as needed.
• May serve on College Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment team.
• Provide professional training and keep the department updated on new developments.
