Job summary

Allen County Department of Environmental Management in Fort Wayne is seeking a hands-on team member to help safely manage household hazardous waste and support recycling programs. This part-time role emphasizes outdoor work, physical activity, and community impact.

You will collect batteries, light bulbs, chemicals, and other materials, assist with drop-off events, weigh and sort waste, and prepare shipments. Training is provided; report to the HHW Coordinator; no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; related degree is a plus.
• Experience in waste management is helpful, but on‑the‑job training is provided.
• Able to lift up to 75 lbs and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Strong attention to safety and ability to work independently or in a team.

Responsibilities

• Collect and manage batteries, light bulbs, chemicals, and other hazardous materials.
• Assist with household hazardous waste drop-off events and community programs.
• Weigh, sort, and prepare materials for proper disposal or shipment.
• Set up and tear down collection events and support vendor pickups.
• Operate and maintain equipment as trained (forklift, bobcat).
• Work with partners to support environmental initiatives across Allen County.
