Job summary

Qualifications

  • EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigeration Certification or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance for municipal buildings and train station facilities, including cleaning and upkeep of restrooms, floors, doors, windows, and exteriors.
  • Check mechanical systems (HVAC, generators, pumps, belts, coils) and perform basic maintenance and part replacements.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, plumbing, and mechanical problems as they arise.
  • Set up for events and handle related infrastructure tasks (tents, power, generator hookups, signage).
  • Respond to safety regulations and maintain regular attendance; follow Village policies.

Under general supervision, performs building maintenance, alteration, troubleshooting, and repair duties of low complexity involving HVAC, carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical. Performs custodial and facility support services for all municipal buildings and the commuter train station facility, and other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform maintenance for all municipal buildings and the commuter train station facility as required, including, but not limited to, cleaning and maintaining restrooms, floors, doors, windows, trash receptacles, and facility exteriors, as well as graffiti removal. Perform daily, weekly, and monthly rounds to ensure proper building operation and adequate supplies.
  • Check mechanical systems for proper operation. Systems checked include heating, air conditioning, ventilation, generators, compressors, unit heaters, overhead doors, sump pumps, and other related equipment. Perform basic maintenance on various types of equipment, including replacement of filters, oiling of motors, greasing of bearings, replacing belts, cleaning of coils, and similar tasks.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and repairing various mechanical systems, including heating and air conditioning control circuits, compressor malfunctions, fuel systems, mechanical systems, and electrical and plumbing repairs.
  • Perform electrical maintenance and repairs, including changing light bulbs, checking ballasts, replacing switches or outlets, and checking amp draws on electrical equipment to confirm that motor starter controls are working properly. Must be able to properly use an electrical meter to measure amps, volts, and ohms.
  • Collect daily parking fees from meters at the commuter parking lot and submit receipts to the Village Collector’s Office. Set up, operate, and take down Village special events and other events as assigned, including the setup of tents, staging, electrical power and generator hookups, fencing installation, water supply, signage, layout, operations, cleanup, take-down, and recap.
  • Following Village Exposure Control Protocols, clean Village facilities, equipment, and/or furnishings after bloodborne pathogen exposure incidents.
  • Respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Follow all safety regulations, policies, and procedures. Report all unsafe conditions and acts to the supervisor. Report all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible, but no later than the end of the employee’s work shift. Follow recognized safe work practices.
  • Adhere to all Village policies and procedures within the department and as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

EDUCATION &/OR EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to two years of experience in general maintenance and repair, including minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Requires possession of a valid Class B Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brake endorsement or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • Requires possession of an EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigeration Certification or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire.
