Job summary

CN is seeking a diligent S&C Apprentice (Illinois Central) to install, repair, test, and maintain railway signaling and information systems. The role requires outdoor work, safety focus, and adherence to CN standards across varying weather and terrain.

Join a one-year apprentice program with 3 weeks of classroom training, followed by progression to a Signals and Communications Maintainer. Paid training, union benefits, and long-term seniority protections apply.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Must hold or be able to qualify for Rail Operating Rules (ROR) qualifications.
• Must be available for shift work including weekends and nights.
• Safety-conscious with ability to perform physical tasks.

Responsibilities

• Install, repair, test, and inspect signal systems and apparatus (blocks, controls, interlocking).
• Perform construction duties: dig trenches, lay cables, install equipment.
• Support highway grade crossing protection and yard operations.
• Use tools to bury cable and test signal plans; work on high-rail equipment.
• Follow CN safety policies to ensure a safe work environment.
