Hands-on Engineering Manager for Open Source & Platform

Job summary

NetBox Labs is seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead one of our product teams building NetBox, Add-ons, SDKs, and the observability suite. You will stay close to the code while coaching engineers and shipping high-quality software for on-premises and cloud deployments.

You will drive sprint planning, unblock blockers, and collaborate with product managers to translate customer problems into deliverables.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager or Team Lead, ideally in a player-coach capacity where you're still writing code or reviewing PRs regularly.
• Track record of delivering projects to completion on tight timelines with bias toward action over process.
• Strong technical background to review designs and code and earn credibility with senior engineers.
• Experience with Agile methodologies, DevOps, and CI/CD in a fast-moving environment.
• Proficiency with GitHub for code management, project tracking, and collaboration.
• Solid understanding of software security principles and practices.
• Experience with open-source software development and community engagement is a plus.
• Excellent, direct communication skills for remote, async-first work.

Responsibilities

• Lead a squad of engineers day-to-day while staying hands-on: code reviews, design discussions, and occasionally shipping code to unblock the team.
• Drive execution by breaking down problems, setting sprint goals, removing blockers, and ensuring deadlines.
• Own the software development lifecycle from planning to release for your team's projects.
• Run sprint planning, stand-ups, and retros with GitHub and internal tools, delivering well-scoped work.
• Champion secure, modern software development practices and maintain high quality without slowing the team.
• Collaborate with product managers to translate customer problems into deliverables and push back when scope/timescales are misaligned.
• Coach and mentor engineers to grow while actively contributing when needed.
• Foster ownership, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing within the team.
• Support open-source contributors and community-facing initiatives where relevant.
• Report progress clearly to engineering leadership and flag risks early.
