Job summary

Ad Hoc LLC seeks an Engineering Lead to drive Java microservices development and modernize a government-focused platform. You will lead from the inside, shipping production code daily while mentoring a small team of engineers and ensuring high-quality delivery.

You will own API design, service decomposition, data access, and integration with existing enterprise systems, guiding architectural decisions and technical direction throughout the program lifecycle.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; 9+ years of software engineering experience.
• Currently hands-on and shipping production code daily.
• 8+ years in Java development (Java 17+).
• 5+ years building microservices with Spring/Spring Boot.
• 5+ years REST API design in microservices architecture.
• 5+ years with Oracle or similar relational DBs; ORM (Hibernate/JPA).
• Proven track record improving engineering quality (testing, code reviews).
• Experience mentoring engineers; strong communication to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship and able to obtain Public Trust clearance.

Responsibilities

• Hands-on Engineering Lead shipping production code in Java 17+ and Spring Boot.
• Manage a small team of Ad Hoc engineers, supporting growth and day‑to‑day needs.
• Design and own end-to-end technical work including APIs and service decomposition.
• Raise engineering standards via code reviews, pairing, and testing coverage.
• Act as technical point of contact with customer architects and staff.
• Communicate risk, tradeoffs, and dependencies to diverse stakeholders.
• Contribute to system design docs, architecture decisions, and program delivery.
