Job summary

The Leadership Agency Inc. in New York, NY is seeking an Engineering Manager for a hands-on backend leadership role. You will lead the backend team, design APIs, model data, and contribute 70–80% of your time to coding in Java while mentoring junior engineers.

You will own real-time data distribution, build scalable services, and craft robust APIs for live sports data. This role blends leadership with deep technical work in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of backend development with at least 3 focused on REST API design.
• Deep relational data modeling and MySQL expertise.
• Hands-on experience with Hibernate or Apache Cayenne ORM.
• Experience mentoring engineers; leadership is welcome but not required.
• Authorization to work in the US; visa sponsorship not available.

Responsibilities

• Design and build high-performance, scalable backend services and RESTful APIs in Java.
• Own pre-game, in-game and post-game data distribution: feeds, endpoints and the infrastructure that supports them.
• Build APIs on top of real-time tracking and sensor data.
• Design relational schemas and tune MySQL queries for high-traffic workloads.
• Mentor three backend engineers through code review, pairing and design discussions.
• Scale the backend team as headcount grows.
