Job summary

Berger Engineering Company is seeking an Assistant Controller to manage accounting operations for our growing commercial HVAC and project-based business. You will lead financial reporting, month-end close, job costing, and internal controls while collaborating with operations, project management, payroll, and leadership.

The ideal candidate brings 5+ years in project-based accounting, strong Excel skills, and experience with job costing, WIP, and percentage-of-completion accounting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in commercial construction or project-based environments.
• Experience with job costing, WIP reporting, percent-of-completion accounting, or contract accounting.
• Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, and financial analysis).
• Experience with SAGE or similar accounting systems.

Responsibilities

• Handle the overall accounting function and day-to-day financial operations.
• Manage and review general ledger activity, reconciliations, journal entries, and accruals.
• Assist with month-end and year-end close processes.
• Oversee job-cost accounting and monitor project costs.
• Review project profitability, WIP, and cost-to-complete estimates.
• Coordinate with external auditors and financial partners as needed.
