Job summary

Ambient Enterprises is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join our finance team in a dynamic, fast-paced environment in California. You will manage daily accounting operations, support budgeting and forecasting, ensure GAAP compliance, and drive process improvements across the organization.

With 5+ years in accounting and a strong supervisory background, you will oversee a team, coordinate with external auditors, and contribute to strategic financial planning for multiple HVAC

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• CPA license strongly preferred.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with supervisory exposure.
• Strong GAAP knowledge and financial reporting skills.
• Proficiency in ERP systems (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Dynamics) and advanced Excel.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication abilities.
• Construction industry experience including WIP, job costing, lien waivers.
• Tax compliance familiarity and FP&A knowledge.
• Proven track record of process improvements or automation.

Responsibilities

• Assist in preparing financial statements, reports, and analyses.
• Oversee daily accounting operations: AP, AR, GL housekeeping.
• Participate in budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
• Ensure GAAP compliance and support internal/external audits.
• Maintain internal controls and conduct monthly reconciliations.
• Support job costing, project profitability, and % complete tracking.
• Supervise accounting staff and mentor junior team members.
• Identify opportunities for process improvements and automation.
• Provide strategic support to Controller and senior management.

Job Description

About the role: We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our finance team. The Assistant Controller will play a vital role in managing the company’s financial operations, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and supporting the Controller in overseeing the financial health of the organization. This role requires strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of accounting principles, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Experience in the construction industry is a strong plus.

Key Responsibilities

• Financial Reporting: Assist in preparing accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and analyses for internal and external stakeholders.
• Accounting Operations: Oversee daily accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger maintenance.
• Budgeting and Forecasting: Collaborate with the finance team to develop budgets, monitor variances, and provide detailed forecasts.
• Compliance: Ensure adherence to GAAP, company policies, and regulatory requirements. Support audits by providing documentation and addressing inquiries.
• Internal Controls: Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining effective internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure data accuracy.
• Reconciliations: Perform and review monthly account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Job Costing: Support job costing processes by ensuring accurate allocation of costs to projects, tracking project profitability, and % of completion.
• Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance and training to support their professional growth.
• Process Improvement: Identify opportunities for process enhancements and automation to improve efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
• Support Controller: Provide strategic and operational support to the Controller and senior management as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• CPA license strongly preferred.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, accounting standards, and financial reporting.
• Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics).
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including experience with pivot tables and complex formulas.
• Exceptional organizational and time-management skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
• Experience in the construction industry, including familiarity with WIP (Work in Progress) reporting, job costing, and lien waivers.
• Familiarity with tax compliance and regulatory filings.
• Knowledge of financial planning and analysis (FP&A).
• Proven track record of implementing process improvements or automation initiatives.

Pay Range

$136,000+ DOE
