We are partnering with a well-established mechanical construction organization seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join its growing accounting and finance team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who combines strong technical accounting skills with a hands-on approach to financial operations. The Assistant Controller will play a key role in supporting the Controller, overseeing core accounting functions, strengthening financial processes, and ensuring accurate and timely reporting.

What You'll Do
- Partner with the Controller to oversee day-to-day accounting and financial operations.
- Support the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Assist with preparation and analysis of financial statements and management reporting.
- Monitor general ledger activity and investigate unusual or inconsistent balances.
- Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, payroll accounting, and other transactional accounting functions.
- Oversee and analyze job cost accounting, including project costs, revenue, billing, and profitability.
- Partner with project management and operations to investigate job cost variances and improve financial visibility.
- Assist with work-in-progress reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project forecasting.
- Help maintain strong internal controls and identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and procedures.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow analysis, and other financial planning activities.
- Assist with external audits, tax compliance, insurance audits, and other third-party reporting requirements.
- Utilize Vista by Viewpoint and other financial systems to maintain accurate accounting and project information.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and support to accounting team members.
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes, improve reporting, and increase the efficiency of the accounting function.
- Perform other accounting and finance responsibilities as needed.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within construction, mechanical contracting, engineering, manufacturing, or another project-based environment.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, financial statements, month-end close, and general ledger accounting.
- Experience with job cost accounting, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion, and project profitability strongly preferred.
- Experience with Vista by Viewpoint or a comparable construction ERP is highly desirable.
- Strong Excel skills and demonstrated ability to analyze financial data.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, or providing direction to accounting team members.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to see both the big picture and the finer points.
- Ability to communicate effectively with accounting, operations, project management, and executive leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to take ownership, meet deadlines, and operate effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
