Job summary

Theuniversityunion in Chapel Hill, NC, seeks a Group Counselor Apprentice to lead and mentor youth as part of Durham Tech’s Early Childhood Apprenticeship program, under the Youth Program Director’s supervision.

You will foster relationships with participants, model positive behavior, and help deliver safe, engaging activities in alignment with YMCA values. Applicants must meet eligibility and scheduling requirements.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High School diploma or GED required.
• Must be currently enrolled in Durham Tech’s Apprenticeship program.
• BSAC Certification required prior to hire.

POSITION SUMMARY:

In partnership with Durham Tech Early Childhood Apprentice Program, and under the supervision of the Youth Program Director, the Group Counselor Apprenticeis responsible forleading, developing, and building relationships with the youth participants in the program.

Theyare responsible formanaging these functionsin accordance withthe stated mission, goals, and policiesestablishedby the administrative staff, governing committees, and Board of Directors of the YMCA.

Job Schedulo: Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Program sites include Central, Efland, Grady, Hillsborough, New Hope, Pathways and River Park Elementary schools.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Supervisesand builds relationships witha group of elementaryand/or middle schoolstudents.
• Implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentallyappropriateandconsistent with YMCA values.
• Creates an atmosphere that is fun, safe,friendlyand challenging.
• Mentors and models responsible behavior while leadingchildren inthe program.
• Models andfacilitatesrelationship-building skills in all interactionsand maintains positiverelationships with campers, parents, schoolstaffand other YMCA staff.
• Adheres toYMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinarysituations, child abusepreventionand emergency management.
• Ensures that space and equipment used for the program is taken care of andleft in good, clean condition daily.
• Attends staff meetings andtrainings.
• Develops andmaintainscollaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication withinareaof responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• At least 18years of age.
• High School/GEDrequiredwithpreviousexperience working with children.
• Mustbe currentlyenrolled in Durham Tech’s Apprenticeship program and selected toparticipatebycollege administration guidelines.
• Must obtain BSAC Certification prior tohire.Other specific certifications and/or training may berequired.
• Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor education, planning andorganizing activities, crafts, songs/music, skits, sports, recreational games,etc.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
• Multi-lingualdesired but notrequired.

• Primarily office and program settings with frequent interaction in gyms, classrooms, and outdoor spaces.
• Moderate noiselevels;may be louder during youth or community activities.
• Regular use ofcomputer,phone, and other office technology.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching; occasional lifting or moving up to 40lbs
• Some work performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Flexible schedulerequired— may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional travel between branches or sites.
• Must be able to provide valid identification for employment eligibility verification.
• Mustresidein the YMCA of the Triangle service area (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and surrounding areas).
