Job summary

Theuniversityunion in Cary, NC seeks a Youth Counselor Apprentice to lead and develop relationships with youth in our after-school program, in collaboration with Wake Tech Community College’s Apprenticeship program. The role supports multiple site locations and emphasizes safety, engagement, and YMCA values.

The position offers part-time hours and opportunities to mentor students, coordinate activities, and work with school staff, parents, and community partners to foster positive growth.

Qualifications

• Must be currently enrolled in Wake Tech’s Apprenticeship program and selected to participate by college administration guidelines.
• Previous experience working with children or teens preferred but not required.
• Experience in outdoor education, planning and organizing activities, crafts, songs/music, skits, sports or recreational games.
• Specific certifications and/or training may be required.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
• Multilingual desired but not required.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and builds relationships with a group of elementary and/or middle school students.
• Implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
• Creates an atmosphere that is fun, safe, friendly and challenging.
• Mentors and models responsible behavior while leading children in the program.
• Models and facilitates relationship-building skills in all interactions and maintains positive relationships with campers, parents, school staff and other YMCA staff.
• Adheres to YMCA policies and procedures, including medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency management.
• Ensures space and equipment used for the program is kept in good, clean condition daily.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings.
• Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.

POSITION SUMMARY:

In partnership with Wake Tech Community CollegeEarly Childhood Apprenticeship program,and under the supervision of theProgram Director,the Youth CounselorApprenticeis responsible forleading, developing, and building relationships with the youth participants inassignedprogram.

Theyare responsible formanaging thesefunctionsinaccordance withthe stated mission, goals, and policiesestablishedby the administrative staff, governing committees, and Board of Directors of the YMCA.

After School program locations may include: Kingswood, Laurel Park, Morrisville, Northwoods, and Salem Elementary schools.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Supervisesand builds relationships witha group of elementaryand/or middle schoolstudents.
