Job summary

The YMCA, in partnership with Wake Tech Community College, is seeking a Youth Counselor Apprentice in Apex, NC. You will lead and develop relationships with youth participants under the supervision of the Program Director, aligned with YMCA values.

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 6:50 a.m.–8:50 a.m. at multiple elementary sites. Base pay $11/hour, plus $2/hour extra in Before School programs, totaling $13/hour.

Qualifications

• At least 18 years of age.
• High School/GED required with previous experience working with children.
• Currently enrolled in Wake Tech’s Apprenticeship program.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and builds relationships with a group of children (elementary/middle school).
• Implements developmentally appropriate activities aligned with YMCA values.
• Creates a fun, safe, friendly and challenging atmosphere.
• Mentors and models responsible behavior for youth participants.
• Maintains positive relationships with campers, parents, school staff and YMCA teammates.
• Handles medical, disciplinary and emergency procedures per policy.
• Ensures space and equipment are safe and clean after use.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings.
• Develops collaborative relationships with community organizations.

Description

In partnership with Wake Tech Community College Early Childhood Apprenticeship program, and under the supervision of the Program Director, the Youth Counselor Apprenticeis responsible forleading, developing, and building relationships with the youth participants in assigned program.

Theyare responsible formanaging these functionsin accordance withthe stated mission, goals, and policiesestablishedby the administrative staff, governing committees, and Board of Directors of the YMCA.

Job Schedule: Monday through Friday from 6:50 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. Program sites include Apex Friendship, Ballentine, Baucom, Herbert Akins and Swift Creek Elementary schools. In addition to the rate of $11/hour, you will receive an extra $2/hour when working in any Before School program, for a total of $13/hour.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Supervisesand builds relationships witha group of elementaryand/or middle schoolstudents.
• Implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentallyappropriateandconsistent with YMCA values.
• Creates an atmosphere that is fun, safe,friendlyand challenging.
• Mentors and models responsible behavior while leadingchildren inthe program.
• Models andfacilitatesrelationship-building skills in all interactionsand maintains positiverelationships with campers, parents, schoolstaffand other YMCA staff.
• Adheres toYMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinarysituations, child abusepreventionand emergency management.
• Ensures that space and equipment used for the program is taken care of andleft in good, clean condition daily.
• Attends staff meetings andtrainings.
• Develops andmaintainscollaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication withinareaof responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• At least 18years of age.
• High School/GEDrequiredwithpreviousexperience working with children.
• Mustbe currentlyenrolled inWakeTech’s Apprenticeship program and selected toparticipatebycollege administration guidelines.
• Specific certifications and/or training may berequired.
• Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor education, planning andorganizing activities, crafts, songs/music, skits, sports, recreational games,etc.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
• Multi-lingualdesired but notrequired.

• Ability to plan,leadandparticipatein a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
• Primarily office and program settings with frequent interaction in gyms, classrooms, and outdoor spaces.

• Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching; occasional lifting or moving up to 40lbs.
• Some work performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.
