Job summary

The Grounds Worker II / Gardener at Tryon Palace will perform all levels of garden and grounds maintenance to achieve high aesthetic standards. This role covers the main site and the North Carolina History Center, including special event prep and maintenance.

Responsibilities include weed control, fertilizing, mowing, pruning, and implementing plant displays. A valid NC pesticide license or ability to obtain within 90 days is required, and lifting 50–100 lbs is expected.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Two years of progressive experience in horticultural work required.
• Associate degree or closely related field or equivalent combination of education/experience acceptable.
• May require North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily landscape care including trees, shrubs, beds by weeding, fertilizing, mowing, pruning and pesticide application.
• Maintain lawns, marl paths, sidewalks and mulched beds.
• Install and maintain seasonal horticultural displays in assigned garden areas.
• Propose planting plans and select culturally adapted plantings to enhance garden appearance.
• Support special events by preparing gardens for interpretive/educational events and third-party events.
