Job summary

The University of Iowa Landscape Services seeks a Groundskeeper I to maintain campus grounds and support Groundskeeper II. The role requires basic groundskeeping knowledge and the ability to operate tools and equipment, with winter snow/ice removal duties on occasion.

Primary tasks include maintaining areas per the plan, assisting other crews, and performing basic equipment maintenance. A valid driver's license and UI Fleet Safety compliance are required.

Qualifications

• One year of experience operating groundskeeping machinery or any combination of related experience/education totaling one year.
• Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain UI Fleet Safety standards.
• Desirable CDL with Air Brakes and experience with snow/ice removal equipment.

Responsibilities

• Operate utility vehicles, mowers, skid loaders, tractors and attachments as needed.

Job description

The University of Iowa, Landscape Services is seeking a highly motivated person to work as a Groundskeeper I. This position provides support to Groundskeeper II in assigned Campus Area; may provide assistance to other Landscape Services crews for projects as needed. Must have basic knowledge of grounds maintenance skills and equipment and hand tools. Working knowledge of plant material and care. During inclement winter weather this position will be required to assist in snow and ice removal in a variety of equipment that may include skid steers, plow trucks, sander, or Polar Trac.

Duties To Include

• Responsible for maintaining assigned areas as outlined in the Landscape Services Management Plan
• Perform snow removal using designated equipment, such as utility vehicle with sander, shovel, and snowblower
• Assist other Landscape Services units as needed such as the Tree Crew, Turf Crew, by operating utility vehicle, mowers, skid loaders, JCB, tractors, etc. and attachments
• May assign, coordinate, and review the work of other groundskeeping personnel in coordination with Landscape Management Supervisor
• Perform minor repairs and service work on equipment

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm; Due to the critical operational needs of the department, this position may be required to work overtime. During inclement winter weather outside of your regularly scheduled shift, required to answer phone and return to campus for snow and ice removal.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

• One year of experience in operating the machinery and tools used in groundskeeping work or
• Any combination of related experience and education from which comparable knowledge and ability can be acquired which totals one year.

Special Qualifications

• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards.

Desirable Qualifications

• Two or more years previous groundskeeping experience
• Experience operating snow/ice removal equipment
• Class A or B CDL with Air Brakes
• Good communication skills and experience working on a team
• Basic computer experience
• Preventative maintenance and troubleshooting experience
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives
