Perform responsible maintenance and upkeep of the grounds and facilities at all Parks and Recreation facilities.

Distinguishing Features

Employees in this class are responsible for maintaining property, buildings, and grounds. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor.

Illustrative Examples of Work

• Open and close the park and facilities.
• Maintain cleanliness of grounds and facilities, including restrooms; supply facilities with paper products.
• Maintain landscaping, shrubs and trees.
• Build, place, repair, and secure signs for the park.
• Maintain trails, walking paths and grassy areas.
• Assist the general public with questions and monitor the general safety of park visitors.
• Maintain a supply of educational materials for park visitors.

Recruitment and Selection Guidelines

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General maintenance and mechanical knowledge, technical ability, ability to recognize problem areas and react accordingly, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public.

Physical Requirements

• Perform basic life operational support functions such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
• Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Possess visual acuity to operate machines, hand tools, mechanical or skilled trade tasks such as carpentry, technology, plumbing, painting, and mechanics.
• Hold visual acuity to operate trucks, Bobcats and other equipment, and to ensure accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work.
• Operate in inside and outside environmental conditions, including temperatures above 100°F and below 32°F for extended periods.
• Work near moving mechanical parts, electrical current, scaffolding, high places, high heat, chemicals, oils, cutting fluids, and in narrow aisles, shafts, manholes, enclosed rooms, sewage and water line pipes that may cause claustrophobia.
• Handle potentially infectious bodily fluids during duties.

Education and Experience

High school education with some experience in landscaping and equipment repair; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid North Carolina Driver License.
