Job summary

The Facilities Department at Wofford College invites applications for a full-time groundskeeper. The position reports to the grounds supervisor and is a key member of the groundskeeping crew responsible for all aspects of campus landscaping and maintenance.

Primary duties include groundskeeping and landscaping (mulching, mowing, pruning, planting) and maintenance support (equipment upkeep, training, compliance with safety standards).

Qualifications

• One year of landscaping, grounds or maintenance-related work experience is required.
• Current and valid driver’s license to operate Wofford vehicles.
• Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.
• Reliability and timely reporting, adherence to work schedule/shift.
• Physical demands: outdoor work in varying temperatures; climbing ladders and bending.

Position Overview

The Facilities Department at Wofford College invites applications for a full-time groundskeeper. The position reports directly to the grounds supervisor and is a valued member of the groundskeeping crew, responsible for overseeing all phases of overall groundskeeping and maintenance on the campus.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Groundskeeping and landscaping (70%):
  • Mulches, weeding, thatch removal, aerating, trimming and edging around flower beds, sidewalks, pathways and walls.
  • Prepares planting beds with hand and power tools; integrates soil amendments; plants bulbs, flowers, ground covers, trees and shrubs; applies mulch.
  • Prunes trees, shrubs, vines and hedges.
  • Applies seed, fertilizer and chemicals as required.
  • Mows, trims and edges turf areas using riding mower, push mower, weed whip and edger.
  • Rakes/blows leaves with appropriate equipment and performs snow and ice removal with hand tools and power equipment.
  • Ensures walkways, sidewalks and parking lots are clear of debris, leaves, shrubs, snow, ice, etc.; removes debris using proper equipment.
• Maintenance and administrative support (30%):
  • Performs minor equipment maintenance to keep equipment/tools operational.
  • Attends training and seminars to stay abreast of current operational or safety standards, techniques and requirements.
  • Performs other duties/tasks as assigned, including appointment to assigned committees or service work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Overall knowledge of supplies, techniques, skills, materials and methods of landscaping and maintenance of lawns and formal plantings.
• Knowledge of appropriate tools and equipment operations, uses and techniques necessary to accomplish grounds maintenance and landscaping tasks.
• Experience operating riding and push mower, power tiller, power edger, weed eater, blower, sprayer, tractor, skid steer loader, dump-bed truck and basic hand and power tools safely.
• Skill in performing minor maintenance of grounds-related equipment.
• Knowledge of safety requirements, policies and applicable procedures, including OSHA and other federal and state regulations.

Qualifications

• Ability to lift and carry minimally 50 pounds.
• Reliability and timely reporting, adherence to work schedule/assigned shift.
• Physical demands: sitting, standing, walking, climbing ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying; may require maneuvering up to 50 pounds multiple times per shift in outdoor conditions with exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures or uncomfortable weather.
