Summary
The Grounds Maintenance Zone Supervisor position provides support to the Grounds Program through serving as a working supervisor for the purpose of enhancing overall campus beautification. Maintaining a safe, functional, clean, efficient, and attractive living and learning environment. This job requires self-direction and limited supervision. This position reports directly to the Grounds Operations Manager along with other Grounds Supervisors. Reporting directly to this position are Senior Groundskeeper and Groundskeeper positions. The nature of this Supervisor role within the organization is to schedule and perform grounds maintenance, snow and ice removal, campus clean up, landscape installation, hardscape maintenance, and operate grounds equipment to promote campus beauty and distinction among urban universities.
Essential Functions
- Serves as team leader, schedules, and performs all grounds maintenance, hardscape maintenance, and various grounds related tasks and administrative duties within assigned zone ensuring team goals are met.
- Offers technical assistance to Groundskeeping staff.
- Instructs employees in removing trash and recyclable materials from designated exterior spaces and performs these duties as a working supervisor.
- Maintains open communication and encourages teamwork.
- Focuses on the interaction of people, facilities, and service delivery systems.
- Provides customer follow up to assure projects are completed in a manner that exceeds expectations.
- Supports facilities operations teams or zones, as necessary.
- Coordinates and assists in the implementation of campus projects (landscaping, laying sod, bollard and signage repair, etc.) utilizing resources within and outside the unit.
- Performs and assists in supervision of snow and ice removal.
- Available for weekend and overtime work as scheduled or needed for snow removal and other assigned work.
- Operates all grounds equipment including mowers, edgers, tractors, etc. and instructs staff on safe and proper equipment operation.
- Ability to operate irrigation systems, identifies irrigation problems and coordinates repairs.
- Plans and updates personal development goals to achieve pesticide and grounds maintenance certification requirements.
- Keeps abreast of changing technology within the greens industry.
Supervisory Responsibility
- Directly supervises one Senior Groundskeeper and two Groundskeeper position(s).
- Schedules and performs special projects.

Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work
- Full-Time.
- 40 hours per week.
Salary Range
- $29.09 - $37.82 per hour.
Required Education And Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 3-5 years of relevant experience.
- Certified Landscape Technician (CLT) Certification required or must be obtained within two years of employment.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Skill in the operation of heavy trucks and grounds equipment.
- D.C. pest control certification (3A, B) or must be obtained within one year of employment.
- Knowledge of operation of grounds equipment, horticulture maintenance practices and standards, irrigation systems, measuring and calculations as related to grounds care.
- Knowledge of most common plant names and where to find information on those which not familiar with.
- Knowledge of work methods, equipment, and procedures to assure health and safety standards and precautions are in compliance with District EPA, and OSHA regulations and requirements.
- Knowledge of proper pruning techniques for trees, shrubs, and flowers. Professional landscape maintenance certification (PGMS, ALCA, PLCAA) or ability to obtain within 18 months of employment.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
