Job description

Grounds Maintenance Technician II - Grounds Maintenance

The Parks and Recreation Grounds Maintenance Technician II performs skilled and semi-skilled work in landscaping, grounds maintenance, and park improvements across the County. This position functions as a lead worker, directing field operations and work crews with some procedural guidance, while exercising independent judgment on task execution under general supervision. Responsibilities include operation of maintenance equipment, facility upkeep, and execution of beautification and safety initiatives across public spaces.

The primary schedule for this full-time position is Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

  • Drives and/or operates a county vehicle or equipment and must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
  • Direct field operations and provide guidance to less-experienced staff.
  • Mow, trim, edge, and weed turf, green spaces, and medians.
  • Apply fertilizers and maintain logs of chemical usage in compliance with regulations.
  • Conduct general maintenance of park facilities, equipment, restrooms, and sports fields.
  • Perform pond and irrigation system maintenance.
  • Assist in litter control across parks, greenways, roads, and rights-of-way.
  • Inspect and maintain amenities including piers, boat ramps, playgrounds, gazebos, walkways, and benches.
  • Conduct minor repairs (e.g., fences, plumbing, carpentry) and building maintenance including painting and pressure washing.
  • Perform tree maintenance including trimming and branch removal.
  • Maintain accurate records including work orders and daily logs.
  • Performs work duties during an on-call rotation for nights and weekend work.
  • Support setup for events and emergency response initiatives as needed.
  • Assist with disaster preparedness and recovery operations during natural or man-made emergencies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education, Training, and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience in grounds or turf maintenance experience required, three (3) to five (5) years of experience preferred.
  • Requires successful completion of classes in turf grass maintenance or grounds maintenance.

Skills and Abilities
  • Must have sufficient physical strength, agility, and stamina to perform assigned tasks in varying weather.
  • Proficient in the use of landscaping and maintenance equipment and hand tools.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, and during emergencies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Requires ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups and the public.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registration
  • Valid Florida Driver License or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida.
  • Florida Commercial Driver License (CDL), Class B, preferred.
  • Must have or be able to obtain from the Florida Department of Agriculture, Pesticide Applications License (Core or Turf/Ornamental).
  • Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses:
    • IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS); and
    • IS-700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System

Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Requires standing and walking most of the day.
  • The job involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 20 pounds.
  • The job requires frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, balancing, twisting, reaching above shoulders, and occasional crawling, climbing, jumping, and throwing.
  • The job requires the completion of tasks that involve simple grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manual manipulation, operating foot controls/levers, driving automotive equipment, and working in darkness.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception and color vision, hearing, and speaking.
  • The job may risk exposure to adverse weather, moving machinery, fumes and gases, electrical hazards, unprotected heights, and extreme noise.

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities
  • All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens. Emergency response duties may also include driving and/or operating a county vehicle or equipment and employees must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
