Job summary

The Columbus Zoo and the Columbus Zoological Park Association is hiring for a maintenance-oriented role requiring physical work and weekend/holiday availability. You will maintain grounds, assist with event setup, and support safety, guest service, and daily operations.

Qualifications include 18+, a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license, and TB testing. Prior maintenance experience is preferred, and ability to work in varied weather is essential.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Maintenance experience preferred.
• Valid driver’s license with good driving record required.
• New-Hire TB testing required.
• Able to climb ladders and work in high and/or enclosed spaces.
• Able to operate motorized equipment.
• Able to perform heavy physical work for extended periods of time.
• Able to balance multiple assignments successfully.
• Able to work in varied weather conditions (i.e. extreme heat, rain).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Able to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
• Able to maintain courteous and helpful behavior.
• Availability on weekends and holidays is mandatory.
• Subject to BMV check/Drug Free Workplace Policy/Criminal Background check.

Responsibilities

• Maintains Zoo grounds (e.g. picks up litter/manure and cleans tables/benches/ restrooms/walkways).
• Hangs and takes down light strands and shapes for nighttime events (Wildlights, Zoofari).
• Assists with maintenance projects (painting, fence repair, bench repair, snow shoveling).
• Sets up and takes down tables/chairs/tents for events and performs office duties.
• Provides support for special events (Zoofari/Jazzoo).
• Maintains shop area and equipment (washing, routine maintenance).
• Ensures safety of self, the collection, staff and visitors through proper safety training around animals, equipment and vehicles.
• Interacts with guests (answers questions, gives directions).
• Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks where possible.
• Performs other duties assigned.
• Posted schedule may change based on weather, attendance, and department needs.
