MISO is hiring an Operator in Training to start a 9–12 month program that prepares you to become a System Operator supporting grid reliability across a 15‑state region. You’ll gain core knowledge of the energy industry through a structured curriculum and development activities, and after passing the NERC exam you’ll join the Generation & Interchange team.

Qualifications

• Preferred Education & Experience (one or more)
• A bachelor’s degree (fields such as energy, engineering, business, or other technical areas are a plus)
• Relevant industry or transferrable work experience
• Relevant military experience in technical or operational specialties aligned to energy systems or critical operations
• Be self-motivated to excel in a structured curriculum while learning a new industry and career.
• Ability to adjust to various or changing circumstances and demonstrate flexibility to carry out work objectives.
• Ability to multitask effectively while maintaining attention to detail.
• Demonstrated ability to problem solve, follow procedures, and apply critical thinking in time‑sensitive situations.
• Skilled at clear verbal and written communication; ability to collaborate effectively in a dynamic office environment.
• Aptitude and interest to learn and apply a deep understanding of bulk electric system operations, market operations, and initiatives related to ongoing professional development.
• Willingness and ability to obtain NERC RC System Operator certification as part of the training program and complete all desk‑qualification requirements.
• Ability and willingness to work a 12-hour day/night rotating shift schedule.
• Strong sensory skills, such as good eyesight, hearing, dexterity, and color perception.
• Ability and willingness to complete a 9-12-month training program and remain employed with MISO for an additional 24 months. (36 months combined total commitment)
