Job summary

Placements24 is seeking an experienced Grid Modernisation Engineer to join a major electricity distribution client in Welkom, Free State. The role focuses on planning and implementing smart grid upgrades, DMS enhancements, and integration of DERs to improve grid reliability and resilience.

The ideal candidate will have a 5+ year background in power systems engineering, strong SCADA/DMS/AMI knowledge, and hands-on experience with grid studies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in power systems engineering, with a focus on distribution grids and grid modernization.
• Strong knowledge of SCADA systems, DMS, AMI, and smart grid technologies.
• Experience with power flow analysis, load forecasting, and grid stability studies.

Responsibilities

• Plan, design, and implement grid modernization projects, focusing on smart grid technologies and Distribution Management Systems (DMS).
• Analyze grid performance data to identify areas for improvement and develop modernization strategies.
• Develop technical specifications for new grid equipment, control systems, and communication networks.
• Oversee the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) and renewable energy sources into the existing grid.
• Collaborate with project managers, field technicians, and external vendors to ensure successful project execution.
• Conduct site assessments, feasibility studies, and risk analyses for modernization initiatives in Welkom, Free State.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and operational best practices.
• Provide technical support and troubleshooting for grid operations and modernized systems.
• Develop training materials and conduct training sessions for operational staff on new technologies.
• Prepare technical reports, documentation, and project status updates.
