Job summary

Solar One in New York City is seeking an Independent Contractor Instructor for its Green Workforce Training program to deliver energy efficiency, renewables, construction and building trades courses. Training is hands-on in classrooms and labs, with offsite work across NYC and parts of New Jersey.

The role starts September 2026, requires 3+ years in two or more areas like green construction, HVAC, solar PV, and building operations, plus willingness to travel and adapt to evolving schedules.

Qualifications

• At least three or more years of field and/or teaching experience in two or more of the following areas: green construction, green building operations and maintenance, solar PV installation, or HVAC maintenance and repair.
• Ability to learn new curriculum and material in a primarily independent environment with ongoing research in subject matter areas.
• Strong background and content knowledge in the broader clean energy sector with experience in two or more areas such as construction basics, energy efficiency building maintenance, and energy auditing.
• Industry-recognized certifications (e.g., BPI, NABCEP, LEED) are highly desirable.
• Interest in teaching sustainability, energy efficiency, and renewables to underserved communities.

Responsibilities

• Deliver Solar One training programs to workforce development clients, including green construction, building operations, solar PV installation, and HVAC maintenance.
• Serve as primary instructor for offsite programming in NYPA and BPU programs; collaborate with partners in NY and NJ.
• Travel within New York and New Jersey for future programs and offsite engagements.
• Track attendance, grades, and qualitative student feedback in Salesforce.
• Adapt to changing schedules and cover substitute instructors when needed.
