Job summary

Washtenaw County Health Department is seeking a professional accountant to support governmental accounting practices, grant fiscal management, and reporting across departments. This role requires collaboration with multiple county offices to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.

Under supervision, you will develop accounting systems, monitor grants, prepare monthly/quarterly reports, assist in CAFR preparation, and provide training to grants staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in business or accounting required.
• 1–2 years professional accounting experience; public agency experience desirable.
• Knowledge of governmental accounting practices and internal controls.

Responsibilities

• Develop accounting systems and procedures per department needs and government standards.
• Grant monitoring; track expenditures and reimbursements per grantor contracts.
• Prepare monthly and quarterly grant reports; perform sub-recipient monitoring.
• Assist grants staff with reconciliation, training, and technical support.
• Close grants at calendar year end and grant period end.
• Prepare grants for CAFR and tie-out sheets; accrue expenditures/revenue as needed.
• Support management on special projects and respond to audit requests.
• Draft accounting letters and memos; handle inquiries by phone.
• Maintain liaison with County accounting staff to coordinate transactions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
