Job summary

University of California, Berkeley’s School of Journalism seeks an Assistant Director of Student Services to advise students and faculty on academic issues, manage course scheduling, and coordinate ASE appointments. The role partners with campus offices and leads student outreach, orientation, and career information sessions while supervising up to two student assistants.

Qualifications

• Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
• Knowledge of university systems, policies, and risk assessment.
• Solid verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills across levels of the organization.
• Multicultural competencies: ability to work with diverse populations.
• Knowledge of U.S. visa and immigration procedures for international students and scholars.
• Ability in problem identification, reasoning, and developing solutions.
• Judgment and decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
• Technical skills with CampusSolutions, Canvas, and Google Suite.

Responsibilities

• Advises faculty and students on school and university policies and procedures; reviews progress and degree requirements.
• Provides visa and immigration guidance for students and scholars.
• Interprets policies and advises on conduct, grievances, and discrimination issues.
• Escalates sensitive issues to senior staff and maintains records.
