Job summary

Buro Happold is seeking a Graduate Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineer in Los Angeles to begin a summer 2027 role. You will contribute to design, documentation, and coordination of building systems with senior engineers, gaining hands-on experience in sustainable infrastructure.

The role targets recent graduates and emphasizes collaboration across architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, and civil teams, supported by on-site mentoring and learning opportunities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Fire Protection, Civil, Sanitary, Environmental, or Architectural Engineering.
• Coursework in mechanical design, heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid hydraulics/dynamics.
• Awareness of building, plumbing and fire codes (IPC, NFPA).
• Proficiency with BIM modeling software, such as Revit and AutoCAD.
• Internship experience at an engineering related firm preferred, and proven interest in the built environment and sustainable design.
• Ability to communicate thoughts and technical ideas in an accessible manner.
• Eagerness to learn and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the design, documentation, and coordination of plumbing and fire protection systems for various building types.
• Develop construction drawings from schematic design through construction administration
• Perform calculations using standard engineering software and tools
• Conduct field surveys to document existing conditions and observe progress during construction
• Participate in interdisciplinary coordination with architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, and civil teams
• Assist in client meetings and value engineering sessions
• Contribute to quality assurance and constructability reviews
• Help develop discipline specific standards and specifications
