Marshall University invites applications for four Graduate Assistant positions in the Department of Communication Studies. These teaching/research assignments may involve undergraduate courses and related duties.

Responsibilities include teaching sections of CMM 103, assisting with grading, holding office hours, and supporting the Marshall Presentation Center. A full tuition waiver accompanies the stipend for the GA appointment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies or related field required.
  • Must be admitted to the MA program in Communication Studies to be considered for an assistantship.
  • Must be able to perform all essential job duties as outlined in the job description.

Responsibilities

  • Teach sections of CMM 103: Fundamentals of Speech Communication and/or staff the Marshall Presentation Center.
  • Coach The Thundering Word Speech and Debate Team, or complete other instructional/ research tasks as assigned.
  • Post and hold office hours, assist students, and adhere to course, department, and university policies.
  • Maintain satisfactory progress toward degree and stay in good academic standing.
  • Attend orientation, teacher-training sessions, and other meetings as directed.
  • Average weekly time commitment of 20 hours per week.

Position Details

Position Title: Graduate Assistant (4 positions available).

Description of GA Assignment: GA: Teacher – Adjunct instructor of record and assigned to teach one (half‑time appointment) or two (full‑time appointment) undergraduate course(s) or lab(s). Responsible for assigning student grades and following all University teaching guidelines.

Job Description Summary
  • Graduate assistantships include responsibilities for teaching sections of CMM 103: Fundamentals of Speech Communication and/or staffing the Marshall Presentation Center, coaching The Thundering Word Speech and Debate Team, or completing other instructional or research tasks as assigned.
  • As part of a teaching assistantship, instructors are required to perform all duties associated with university teaching, including assisting students, cooperating with the basic course director, posting and holding office hours, and abiding by all course, department, and university policies.
  • Graduate teaching assistants are expected to hold class during all scheduled meeting times; exceptions must be approved by the course director.
  • Graduate assistants are expected to maintain satisfactory progress toward their degree and remain in good academic standing.
  • Graduate assistants are required to attend all orientation sessions, teacher‑training sessions, and other meetings called by the course supervisor, director of graduate studies, and the department chair.
  • Responsibilities for the assistantship represent an average weekly time commitment of 20 hours per week.

In addition to the stipend, students receive a full tuition waiver (the student is responsible for fees and books).
