Gondola Attendant
Reports to: Tour Sales Supervisor / Gondola Operator
Category: Seasonal (April – September in Hoonah, Alaska)
Salary Range: Seasonal $18.00 plus bonus potential
Summary
Under the direction of the Gondola Operations Supervisor and/or Gondola Operator, acting as a platform or station attendant is responsible for safely loading/unloading passengers onto/ off of gondola cabins. All personnel shall use reasonable care while performing their duties. Conduct all activities and decisions according to Icy Strait Point’s guiding principles: BAP: Best, Authentic, Profitable Cruise Destination.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Be knowledgeable of operational, emergency, and loss of control procedures and the related equipment needed to perform the assigned duties.
- Monitor the passengers’ use of the aerial lift including observing, advising, and assisting them while they are in the attendant’s work area as they embark on or disembark from the aerial lift; respond to unusual occurrences or conditions, choosing an appropriate action such as assisting the passenger, slowing the aerial lift (when applicable), stopping the aerial lift, continuing operation and observation, denying access to an aerial lift to individuals, and advising the operator of observed abnormal or unusual conditions that may affect safety.
- Reasonably maintain loading and unloading areas.
- Assist in evacuation of the lift as assigned.
- Advise and assist passengers with adaptive equipment as assigned.
- Be knowledgeable of the procedures for reporting incidents and obtaining appropriate first aid personnel.
- Keep current on training received on operating procedures related to enclosed cabins, loading/unloading, control center communications and customer service interaction.
- Might receive daily guidance, training or work assignments from the shift Gondola Operator in the absence of the Gondola Operations Supervisor.
- Practice good housekeeping, with emphasis on preventing any condition contributing to personal injury; tasks may include cabin cleaning, window cleaning and/or loading area vacuuming/sweeping/mopping.
- Work as a team member.
- Perform incidental and related duties as required and assigned.
- Promote other Icy Strait Point venues.
- Work individually and as a team member when necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Adequate knowledge or willingness to learn about Tlingit culture.
- Must be able to learn a Tlingit Introduction.
- Knowledge of the local area (marine life, plants, animals, birds).
- Must have good verbal communication; be patient and able to lead groups of kids as well as adults.
- Strong commitment to Safety.
- Ability to learn, retain and present excursion information to guests in an accurate manner.
- This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug testing.
- Constant movement in/out of gondola cabins up/down up to a 1600 ft elevation.
- Exposed to inclement weather conditions (rain, wind, snow).
- Constant public interaction and communication.
- Constant exposure to extreme heights.
- Possible exposure to dangerous situations during emergency evacuations.
- ISP is a non‑smoking facility with designated outside‑smoking areas.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Native Preference under P.L.93‑638 is available.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Willing to live in a remote, rural community.
- Comfortable traveling by small plane or ferry to and from a remote setting.
- Able to walk and drive on gravel roads in inclement weather.
- Capable of moderate physical activity including standing, walking, reaching, climbing, and lifting weights in excess of 25 lbs; able to visually identify safety hazards.
